Born to a family of porcelain dealers, Eugène Claude began as a porcelain painter, member of the Société des Artistes. He painted mainly portraits and still lifes of flowers, fruits and animals. His work was exhibited at the Salon de Paris when he was just 20, in 1861.
He was decorated several times in Salons and participated in the Lyon and Nantes salons. A prolific painter, he provided the Salon with over 60 works in 30 years. A complete catalogue entry by Xavier d’Aleyrac de Coulange, art historian and member of the Société de l’Histoire de l’Art Français, accompanies this work: ‘inspired by the large floral compositions by the 17th c. Flemish school, this canvas is one of the artist’s masterpieces’.
