Our painting illustrates Act II, scene 2 of Shaleskpeare's play "Cymbeline". Daughter of the King of Brittany Cymbeline, Imogene secretly marries her lover Posthumus Leonatus. The couple have exchanged jewels:
Imogene is in possession of Posthumus' bracelet while Posthumus has Imogene's ring. Furious, the king banishes Posthumus. Having fled to Italy, the latter meets Lachimo who bets that he will be able to seduce Imogene. Repulsed by the princess, Lachimo hides in her room and takes advantage of her sleep to steal her bracelet, making Posthumus believe that he has managed to seduce her.
