This work can be compared to the canvas found in the Chambre de Commerce and d’Industrie de Paris (see L. Manœuvre, Louis Garneray, Arcueil, 1997, color illustration p. 74)
Answering requests from enthusiasts, Louis Garneray created several works with the same subject and dimensions. This one could be one of three paintings exhibited at the 1831, 1836 and 1844 Salons: Salon de 1831, no 858, Vue du grand bassin de la ville d’Anvers, prise du haut de la batterie de l’Empereur ; Salon de 1836, no 794, Vue d’Anvers ; Salon de 1844, no 757, Vue d’Anvers
In the background, Notre-Dame d’Anvers cathedral is visible. In the middleground, other administrative and defensive buildings appear, dating back to the port’s modernization under Imperial rule.
