Joan Miró, abstract art as a surrealist fantasy

13 June 2019

Joan Miró is a Catalan artist born on April 20, 1893 in Barcelona. He is famous for his painting combining abstract art and a surrealist fantasy. His style is influenced by his emotions, which range from fanciful and poetic impulses to a hard vision of modern life. Lithographs, illustrated books and engravings, several of which were presented at the Editions auction on Wednesday 26th June 2019, are among the artist's favourite media.

In 1907 he began his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and moved to Paris in 1920 where he discovered Cubism and Fauvism. He then frequented important artists of this period such as Pablo Picasso as well as figures of Dadaism and Surrealism.

At first glance, Joan Miró's work could be considered to be abstract, composed of simple lines and drawings. His works in bright colours are actually carried by a dynamic characterized by the repetition of shapes as evidenced by the lithograph "Oiseau Migrateur" in colours on filigree vellum presented at this sale.

The artist then moves away from academic styles to a more libertarian art with a unique language and emblematic figures. From the 1960s, the artist began a new research focused on space characterized by works often monochrome such as the etching in black on Arches "Les Saltimbanques, Planche I" from 1975.
