A leading figure in Brazilian design and architecture, José Zanine Caldas (1919-2001) brought an organic, committed approach to twentieth-century furniture design in Brazil. Fascinated by the raw beauty of wood and driven by a deep admiration for local craftsmanship, he combined sculptural forms with a respect for materials.
Designed in the 1970s, the ‘Namoradeira’ is a perfect illustration of this philosophy. This iconic bench, carved from a single block of tropical wood, embodies the power and sensuality of Brazilian design. Its generous seat and enveloping curves invite contemplation and dialogue, in keeping with the Brazilian tradition of namoradeiras, benches for two.
An expression of craftsmanship and a sculptural approach to furniture, this rare piece will be featured in our ‘Brazilian Design x Finnish Lights with Annmaris’ sale on 16 April.
