As part of its Editions sale on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, PIASA has the privilege of offering collectors of contemporary art a selection of six serigraphs and lithographs that are emblematic of the aesthetic way of the father of American Pop Art: Andy Warhol.
The past of the artist's family seems to reappear in this colour silkscreen print made in 1984. His father, Ondrej Varhola, Americanized in Andrew Warhola, Sr. (1889-1942), emigrated to the United States in 1914, while his mother, Julia (née Zavacká, 1892-1972), did not arrive until 1921, after the death of her parents. As an active member of the Greek-Catholic Ruthenian Church, the family is immersed in Byzantine iconography. In the work offered for sale, the saint is represented holding the instrument of her martyr.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) Saint Apollonia - 1984, (Feldmann & Schelmann II.331)
Estimation : 6000 / 8000 €
The account of Apollonia’s martyrdom is taken from a letter from Denys, Bishop of Alexandria (died in 265), to Fabien, Bishop of Antioch. In Alexandria as elsewhere, the pagans were able to hunt down Christians and kill them as they pleased. After smashing her jaw and breaking all her teeth, they put her before a pyre, threatening to throw her there, if she did not insult Christ after them. She politely apologized for not being able to satisfy them; then, taking advantage of their distraction, she ran to throw herself into the flames. Published in 250 copies, this work is estimated at between 6000 and 8000 euros.
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) In the bottom of my garden Planche 6 - 1956
Estimation : 1000 / 1500 €
If he also relies on Christian iconography in plate number 6 of "In the bottom of my garden", he treats his subject with humour and derision.
Andy Warhol, a contemporary archaeologist, captured the essence of American society in the mid-20th century by representing icons popularized by the media and cinema. Marilyn Monroe is an archetypal example of this, as seen in Diamond Dust Marilyn published by Sunday B. Morning in 2012.
A leading figure in American contemporary art, Andy Warhol has left his mark by breaking down the barriers between creation while questioning the status of the artist and his relationship with the public.
