This set of six chairs from the Qing Dynasty comes from the performance of the world-famous Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei, Fairy Tail - 1001 chairs, at Documenta in Kassel in 2007.

The artist had randomly recruited via his blog 3000 Chinese people from all social classes - policemen, peasants, small civil servants or students. The candidates had to answer questions such as "What would you like to say to the West? "or "Have you ever been to Germany? "or "Can you cook? "Do you believe in evolution? ». Ai Weiwei had selected 1001 participants and brought them out of China to experience their own "fairy tale" in Germany for 28 days. Ai Weiwei wanted to concretise the idea of importing its culture into this great international meeting of the contemporary art world.
